Decorate the house with bulbs throughout the year
There is still time to enjoy the bulbs at home, those plants with the appearance of onions and with little special care give irresistible and very aromatic flowers. But even if you know them, you may not be aware of all their possibilities. So today we tell you some very interesting.
For example … Did you know that bulbs last for many seasons? You can recover them year after year. You just have to wait for it to finish its flowering and the stem to dry. If they were buried, clean them well without damaging their roots or peeling them. Wrap them in newspaper one at a time and store them in a dry, cool and dark place. Now we just have to wait for their season to come again and wake up from their lethargy.
And although the bulbs are perennial plants, they only bloom in specific seasons – autumn, winter, spring … And like everything beautiful, their flowers hardly last a few days or weeks. A pity, because some varieties are perfect to decorate the house and it would be great to be able to enjoy them in any season. But there is a solution and it is called forcing – a name that is not suggestive on the other hand.
Apparently, bulbs can bloom at any time of the year whenever they think they have had a very hard winter. Suffers that are. To achieve this, place them in the refrigerator or in a place where the temperature is between 1º and 5º – eye! Only refrigerator, nothing freezing. You leave them there for a long time (about 8 weeks for hyacinths and about 12 for tulips) and when you take them out, they will think that their particular spring has started. Plant them every 15 days and you will have flowers for a longer time.
Bulbs in water
Yes, bulbs do not only grow on land but also in water. Planting them is very easy and more if you use early blooming bulbs. Those containers with the upper part wider so that the bulb (the onion) does not touch the water. Because that is precisely the only essential requirement for bulbs to develop in the aquatic environment: that their base never touches the water, only its roots. And although it has the mechanism of a pacifier, I have prepared an infographic with some additional tips for your bulbs to give flowers – otherwise, you will only see the stems grow.
Decorating with bulbs is also a very healthy recycling exercise. This way you can reuse grandma’s crockery or loose and unpaired pieces that you are not willing to throw away. Any container of any shape and material is likely to accommodate this preciousness.
You just have to find your perfect match. The advantage? That the list of species is long and all are ideal: hyacinths, freesias, buttercups, crocus, tulips, daffodils, flowers of saffron, anemones or Nazarenes among others.
They are, without a doubt, ideal plants to decorate the low table of the living room – well, in fact, any table – because if you choose a variety not too high, the conversation between guests or between you and the television will not interfere.
In groups they are much more striking, although you can make these groups in two different ways: a) bulbs of the same species – or different – well compacted in the same and only container ob) planted individually but grouping their containers – in this case, better if these are different in form and height.
