January, time to regenerate the garden
January is the right month for the cleaning and regeneration of the garden, it is the time of rest of the vegetation, convenient to plan and reorganize the distribution and characteristics of the plants, time of reflection for the gardener who now has no urgent tasks or annoying pests.
If you do not like your garden or terrace, this is the time to raise and make changes. Eliminate the depleted marshes, renew the land and plan the necessary work.
February will be the month of pruning and new plantings, but before in the month of January you will have to decide what you want and where you want it, to start the old and have a few weeks to prepare the land.
If you have decided to eliminate a shrub or tree, remember that when you start it, the most important thing is to leave the ground free of roots. Any remaining dead root is a reservoir of fungi and pathogenic bacteria that could make the plant that replaces the snatch sick.
For the same sanitary reason, it is convenient that the plant that replaces the snatch is not from the same family. For example, if you have started an apple tree, do not plant another apple tree in its place, but not a pear tree, since the microbes of the roots of the apple tree that we started, that could remain in the ground, would be in a position to attack the new plant , of tender roots and damaged by the transplant operations.
The rules for the renewal of shrubs and trees are:
Plan carefully which plants you will replace and which ones will replace them.
Never replace a woody plant with one of its own species, genus or family.
Start the plant in January.
Carefully extract all the roots.
Add old manure or earthworm humus, and mix it with the earth. It will accelerate the decomposition of rootlets.
Leave the hole open for at least three weeks. This favors the decomposition of the tiny roots that could have been left in the ground.
The frosts of January contribute to the preparation of the land, since the ice opens the earth and the sponge naturally.
Program the planting for the fourth waning or new moon of February.
In gardens and terraces, woody plants constitute the central element, the axis around which the entire garden space is structured.
It is essential to choose this type of plants well: you will like it, because it will give the tone to everything that surrounds it, like the central note of a melody.
Better to acquire a young plant, although at the moment it does not look much. Young plants adapt better to the new environment and will be less sensitive to pests and diseases. Be patient because your little plant, in about two years, will have acquired the splendor equivalent to that of the most beautiful plants in the nursery, and it will be yours because you will have cultivated it.
